about

Features outtakes from the albums Newfangled Poppycock, Bainbridge Lo-Fi Demos, The Lo-Fi Fuck You Punk Disc

--Liner Notes--

Furry Tail Fred-
Recorded in the bathroom of the house on the cover of The Bainbridge Lo-Fi Demos, mostly to test the acoustics for the song "Door Door". I was also practicing playing percussion on a little set I made from a trashcan and some pencil cases and whatnot. Very simple but somewhat enjoyable, just not quite up to par.

Not A Flea-
One of the two B-Sides from the Lo-Fi Fuck-You Punk Disc. Another example of that hastily assembled DIY percussion I started using on the Bainbridge Demos. And more kinda whispered "shouty" vocals which don't sound very good.

Hypothermia-
The first song I recorded at the apartment my dad got in downtown Seattle after the divorce. The percussion was probably done back at my mom's. The title and inspiration comes from listening to the Rocky Horror Picture Show director's commentary (which I did a lot back then) and hearing about how Susan Sarandon kept performing despite contracting hypothermia on set.

Only When I'm Sad-
More of the contradictory sort of depressing stuff I leaned towards to at this time, like "Love Is Wrong". Not overly high-concept but sort of tonally confused.

Tumbling-
Just one of those songs you want to sound really cool. I can still picture a very good version of this in my head.

Cheating-
Very nearly made Newfangled Poppycock. One of the last songs recorded there in Woodinville, WA. Written from a female perspective. About someone named "Bobby".

Let the Heartaches Ago-
I got into Long John Baldry for a hot minute, but mostly just this song. And mostly just the chorus, which I covered exclusively.

Smoking's Cool-
More edginess from my edgiest album.

Zombieman-
Also nearly made Newfangled Poppycock. This was decent but a little too slow-paced and avant-garde for that album. The bass/synth thing was well-done though. This one was improvised vocally.

You're Lockin' Me Up-
Just more playing with a delay effect, mostly. Raw.

A Screaming Evening-
Pretty much just a worse first attempt at Whitman College. The distortion sounded cool enough to make a real song with.

Norman Rockwell-
Left off American Elements, which was exclusively inspired by Brian Wilson's SMiLE (I hadn't yet heard his 2004 version though). I chose Norman Rockwell to represent Americana here. The backing vocals worked like that did on many of the songs on American Elements and Bainbridge Demos, which I like. They only really worked back when it was lo-fi like that.

Shot Dog Jam-
A little very badly-recorded jam over a little beat I made, and using the chords from Shot My Dog. It was just kinda recorded for whatever reason and left off Punk Lo-Fi because it wasn't punk at all.
