about

Featuring outtakes from the Riese albums Little Heart and Then You Think.

-Liner Notes-

Joey's Talk Show-
Named after Joey Ramone, it's a punk version of Talk Show made for a potential sister album to Brain Show, which would have also featured That's Just Great and Punk Rock Baby.

A Man-
A song about feeling trapped in a marriage, and an identity. I realize now how trapped I felt in a male identity back then, which came out in a lot of songs. I was in hell, and the only solution my brain offered was to wait it out or kill myself. Thankfully I discovered a third solution years later. Anyways... this song is sort of Tom Petty inspired.

Da Da Da-
A cover of the German band Trio. Recorded a few minutes before I Can't Take My Eyes Offa You and Loud Sound. The former ended up being the intro track to Then You Think.

Cookie Thumper-
Pretty simple cover concept. I was memorizing a lot of Die Antwoord lyrics when I was living in Boston. I tried to get many other kids into them but to no avail. I ended up putting some of those lyrics to a little progression and it seemed to work well.

Adam-
A biblical song. It's impossible to avoid writing about the Old Testament, considering how ingrained it is in our culture. However I still think that my interpretation here was fairly boring. If you can find it compelling that's good though.

Last Nite-
Cover of that Strokes song. I just like the energy of that tune. I later found another cover by The Detroit Cobras which is much better than this one.

Ode to Plugs-
Written as a plugs theme for the podcast Comedy Bang Bang. Never used.

Headspace-
Very sparce little spacey electronic tune. Never managed to make the vocals work. Some of the synths sound okay though.

California Scene-
My microphone was completely busted, very fuzzy and it was doing this weird tremolo thing to recordings. So I recorded this in spite of that and tried to make the effect work. It's "supposed to sound like that".

That's Just Great-
True story about a guy in high school who one day decided he hated me. That happened to me with just about every friend I had until I don't think I had a single friend in 10th grade. I don't know whether these people made some kind of pact to cut all contact with me or whether I just did something wrong and wasn't aware of it. I guess I'll never know now. Thinking about stuff like that, you just have to shrug and thank god things got better. I didn't die, and even though most days I wanted to, I still found my way through it.

de Ventura-
Written about The Black Plague. Giovanni de Ventura was a plague doctor in the late 1400s. The narrator has the plague and she has a crush on him.

Hey Man-
One of the songs written for Punk Rock the Musical, a planned followup to Decades Apart that I had actually planned for years before that. Finally got around to recording some of the songs but I'm not sure an all-punk musical works. I'm sure someone else will do it well though. This one's about college kids with similar views and tastes. And even now I can't pretend there isn't anything to rebel against there. There's a reason I didn't go to college.

In Motion-
Kind of a funky synth song, with a decent chorus. Just needed a little work. Very nearly made Then You Think, as did de Ventura, but sometimes you have to make those difficult cuts. I might keep this one now and leave off Wipeout Destiny or some such.

Pastiche Medley-
A fully improvised medley of little songs I made up as I recorded them. Lots of similar british accents on this number. Abandonne Your Life is the only one I had already written years ago. It's performed very differently here though, and goes right into Women Like You (a rather misogynistic little lyric there, that's fucked)

Loud Sound-
A slightly different song in the vein of I Can't Take Eyes Offa You. I like the lyric more here but the harmonies aren't as tight.

SS USO-
My little tribute to the Beach Boys, specifically Holland-era, which is when they recorded "Sail On Sailor". Didn't come out quite as polished as I would have liked but the chorus sounds pretty good.

Since Then-
Certainly one of the better outtakes from Little Heart. Very nearly might have made it. Some of the little pitch-bendy synth sounds are very neat and the backing harmonies are pretty sweet.

Glassware-
A rerecording of Glass from American Elements. Nothing to it really.

The Diary-
My version of the Neil Sedaka classic. It involves screaming and shouting and not a lot of singing.

Sensitive Spirits- Was all set to make it on Then You Think until the very last moment. I pulled it. I just find it a little boring beyond the drumtrack.

Punk Rock Baby- A pretty good punk song.
