about

B-sides from the Riese album Brain Show.

--Liner Notes--

Clown Club-
Just a little beat with some horns which I made a joke about Fight Club over. "Joke" is defined here loosely.

Vacation-
I miss vacations. I want to take another someday. "If you need a vacation, take one" -if only it were that easy.

Exploit U-
Some of my darkest material lyrically, maybe not truly disturbing but this one is kind of revolting to me now. It's just claustrophobic and sinister. But I would never stop myself from writing something dark if that's what entered my mind. Still, I wish I hadn't written it, or hadn't felt the need to write it. The doo-wop genre was still pretty nice to imitate though, and musically it probably could have made an album. Shame.

Airy Zone (Redux)-
A rerecording of a song from American Elements. Instrumental. I've stopped doing these because they're never as good as the original. Even though the whole reason I did them is because of the low recording quality of those songs, that's just part of their charm now.

Bass Groove/Secondary Education-
Probably the best song I have that never made an album. It just didn't fit too well and was very long by my standards (5 minutes). The idea of it was to record two songs in a row with no cuts or edits on any track. So "Bass Groove" was mostly planned out structurally but then when it ended I just improvised "Secondary Education" track by track, with the drums first I think and then synths and guitars and vocals. It works because both tracks are slow and smooth. I'm proud of this one, which I can't say for most of these dumpster fires.

Magic Night (Get Me High)-
My most psychadelic effort. Again, this one is fairly solid but just a little too loose in parts so it didn't make the cut. The droning gang of vocals sounds decent, and better on the chorus.

You Spoil Me (Redux)-
The second attempt to record this song, right after the original "demo". But the demo was way better and not so badly recorded as to leave off the album. So the "real" version got dumped instead. It just worked better looser on the demo. Happens a lot.

Elitist-
I'm probably an elitist. Deep down, I mean. I try not to be one, really. I even admit in this track that I just judge people for being sincere. It's simply a form of self-hatred that I need to overcome.

Magic Song-
An attempt to create a "backing choir" for a song. Kind of ambitious in that respect, but not much to listen to really.

Bigshot-
There's not much to interpret here, lyrically. Title says it all. Overused a whammy pedal on the guitar here.

Doo (Doo Doo Doo)-
More vocal experiments.

Blueberries-
A sincere imitation of Tiny Tim and Louis Armstrong, and trying to recreate some unrealized bit of musical history and collaboration. I like the scatting I did here - "Zippity Boo"! I animated most of a music video for this track which you can view on the Unfinished Animations Reel on the ObscureChess channel.

DARE-
Didn't really think about this one, just went about recording a cover and it came out pretty bad. I did it for a Gorillaz tribute album. Once you get past the solo in the beginning it's more or less listenable.

Stormchasers-
This one was just too bitter and sad, honestly. And musically a little bit boring. I don't know. I needed to put more work into the vocals and melody.

Lootall Night (Redux)-
The only redux that isn't worse than the original I did. It's still not any better, though. Just about the same. It's one of my favorite writings though, and I feel I did Dylan justice still, to this day.
